Generational Connections

Saturday morning my grandma Krause called me at 8:30 a.m. (note: she is in Wisconsin so it was 7:30 a.m. there) to see if I watched the Milwaukee Brewers game last night because Randy Wolf pitched a complete-game shutout. I had to break it to her that I didn’t watch the game, but I did receive updates as it was happening.

A century-old tradition of soccer sprung from a mining town that belongs to history.

In old Beadling, the mine worked six days. Sunday mornings were for church. Sunday afternoons were given to sports. There were only two: baseball in the summer and soccer-serious soccer-the rest of the year. A hodgepodge of nationalities were divided by a half-dozen languages and cultures. Their common bond was a game.

A, History of Dakar

The city of Dakar is made of the 67 communes of Senegal. The commune of Dakar was created by the French colonial administration on June 17, 1887 by detaching it from the commune of Gorée. The commune of Gorée, created in 1872, was itself one of the oldest western-style municipalities in Africa.
