Secretary Solis Helps Launch ‘Caring Across Generations’

You know it has been part of my mission to raise labor standards and increase protections for all workers — especially for our most vulnerable and immigrant workers. And many of you helped us educate them by taking part in our We Can Help campaign. You helped us make it easier for vulnerable workers to know their rights — in many cases, to let them know they actually have rights — to be able to speak up on the job and file complaints — without fear.

GRANDPARENTS RAISING AND NURTURING DEPENDENT CHILDREN

The Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities operates Joining Generations in recognition of the many benefits of bringing together younger and older persons. Over the years, Joining Generations has dealt with various intergenerational issues. Currently, Joining Generations is focusing its resources on providing support to grandparents and relative caregivers who are raising others’ children.

This fact places providers in a difficult position of attempting to meet consumers varied preferences while complying with regulations and an inequitable and arbitrary funding system that has failed to meet the actual cost of care for decades.
For example, the capital costs for nursing facilities under the Medicaid program are capped at one-tenth of the actual cost and have been for over 20 years despite numerous and costly increases in regulations during that period of time.
