Dear Members and Friends
The third meeting of the season will take place on Wednesday 26th Nov 2008 at 7.30pm in The Community Centre, 16 Lisbarnett Road, Lisbane.
Mr. Phelim Breen will deal with “Winter Work” on the theme for the year “Continuing Better Beekeeping”. Phelim is an experienced beekeeper and lecturer and will describe essential winter work for the apiary and beekeeping equipment in terms that beginners will easily understand. Do make a point of attending this month, for another record attendance before the December break. Attendance increased last month with more first time visitors and the return of previous attendees. I know from your comments that you found Norman Walsh’s talk and the discussion on producing queens very useful.
The issues raised certainly stimulated an interesting discussion on the benefits in maintaining strong colonies and reducing the risks associated with imports. If you do not understand some of the “jargon” or the procedures being described do feel free to ask for an explanation of terms used by those addressing the meeting. After all, the secretary suffered reproof for asking for an explanation already given. It wasn’t that painful! “Beginners Impressions, work to be done in the apiary each month and advice for newcomers from more experienced beekeepers” should be an essential part of our development as an Association.
Do make your contribution during the meetings. Thanks are due to all who supported our hosting of the UBKA Beekeepers’ Thanksgiving Service in Killinchy Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening 26th Oct. Also to those who displayed beekeeping equipment and produce at the event and to those who provided some excellent eats.
Special thanks must go to our member and UBKA President, Revd Margaret Johnston for organising the event and Revd Sam Millar from Roe Valley BKA for a sermon clearly focused on the obligation of the beekeeping community to use our craft for the betterment of humanity.
We need members for the Killinchy BKA team(s) taking part in the Belfast & District BKA Christmas Quiz in the Queen’s Leisure Complex Holywood on Monday 8th Dec 2008 @ 7.30. Please make a note in your diary to attend. We await your ideas for the design of an Association logo!! If you have equipment on loan from Killinchy BKA please advise apiary manager Revd. John Bell by the next meeting as he needs to update the inventory of equipment we can offer in mentoring beginners.
Thank you for updating of your contact details. It is very much appreciated in compiling membership records and for a Members Directory to keep in contact on matters of mutual bee keeping issues. Under the Data Protection Act we must have your permission to release your contact details in this way. If you do not wish all your information to be included please advise ASAP.
Kind Regards David McCartney Secretary
